WHY IT'S CALLED OLD COLLEGE

A NAME WITH A STORY

Old College Road takes its name from Rutersville College, the first Methodist and Protestant college in Texas. Chartered in 1840 and granted four leagues of land by the Republic of Texas, it educated more than 800 students in the young state's earliest days.

Three historical markers in Rutersville still tell its story, and Old College Acres carries the name forward.

1837

Missionary Rev. Martin Ruter recommends founding a college in Texas.

1840

Rutersville College is chartered and granted four leagues of land by the Republic of Texas.

Dec. 25, 1840

The first Methodist annual conference in Texas convenes at the college.

1856

After educating 800+ students, the college merges into the Texas Monument and Military Institute.
